What are City & Guilds Qualifications?

City & Guilds is an internationally recognised awarding body founded in the 19th Century and originally financed by the City of London for it's livery companies. It has extended its certification services internationally and now

For registered students:

has representation in over 100 countries. City & Guilds qualifications are respected worldwide and are the accepted standard for many tutors especially in the teaching of textiles in further and adult education. Graduate students of the City & Guilds Creative Studies courses are completely revolutionising the face of patchwork and quilting exhibitions in Britain and beyond and we hope the Creative Sketchbook and Creative Computing courses will be equally influential. The emphasis on original design, combined with sound technical skills is creating innovative and exciting new work whilst still respecting tradition.

Assessment and evaluation will be a valuable part of the interaction between student and tutor. Email makes this an easy and more immediate process - less formal than the usual contact between tutor and student of distance tutor and student of distance learning packages.
All work is subject to External Verification to ensure that the high standards demanded by the awarding body are met. Upon satisfactory completion of the 10 units, a City & Guilds certificate will be awarded.

How long does it take?
Students can register on courses at any time and will be taught on an individual basis, taking anything from several months to 3 years for 7822 and 7922 levels and up to 3 years for Diploma. Much depends on each candidates available time and enthusiasm! You will follow instruction and guidance included in each unit and when tasks are completed you will email images of samples and assignments for online assessment, before continuing to the next unit.

Who are the tutors?
All of the course material is written by Linda Kemshall (with the exception of Creative computing which is co-written with Marie Roper). At the time of enrolment students are allocated a tutor who will assess and advise. Currently Marie is tutor for all Creative Computing courses, Catherine is tutor for Creative Sketchbooks and the Patchwork and Quilting course students are shared by Maureen, Marie and Catherine and Edwina. Linda and Laura are currently taking a break from tutoring new students to free up time to work on a new and very exciting self publishing project thr3fold. www.thr3foldjournal.com

Linda Kemshall
As an artist who trained originally as a painter, I now work mainly in the field of textiles and mixed media. I have taught City & Guilds Patchwork, Quilting and Design since 1992 in Great Britain, for 5 years in the USA and now my centre "DesignMatters" has approval to offer City & Guilds courses via the internet. I am a qualified Vocational Assessor and an External Verifier and I have been City & Guilds National Advisor for Patchwork and Quilting since 1997. My first book 'Color Moves' was published by Martingales in 2001 with the second, 'The Painted Quilt' to be published by David & Charles in 2007. I am a Licentiate of City & Guilds, was awarded a Medal of Excellence for my Diploma level Patchwork and Quilting and have recently been made an Honorary Member of the Institute in recognition of my contribution to vocational education, training and assessment. I am a BA Hons Textiles graduate. I work primarily as a fine artist but also have an established mail order business with my hand dyed fabrics and threads. I am responsible for the design and maintenance of the Design Matters website and provide the technical support for our registered Online students. I am approved by City & Guilds to assess students work. To see examples of my work click HERE.
Edwina Mackinnon
I am fully qualified teacher and have taught both City & Guilds Patchwork & Quilting and Embroidery to Diploma Level. I am passionate about colour and fabric and I especially enjoy colouring my own fabric by dyeing, printing or painting it. I teach regular textile related classes and for the past five years have been Assistant Editor of Patchwork & Quilting magazine.
Catherine Nicholls
My background is in interior design but I now spend much of my time creating textile art inspired by the legends of the Haida Gwaii people native to the area of Western Canada where I grew up. I hold City & Guilds' qualifications in Patchwork and Quilting at 7922 Certificate and 7923, Diploma level. As well as City & Guilds Patchwork and Quilting I teach informal classes based on Haida legends both in North America and Europe. The classes involve storytelling, applique and embellishment.
Marie Roper
I hold City & Guilds' qualifications in Fashion, Embroidery and Patchwork and Quilting. I am an experienced tutor who has been teaching all aspects of
textile art for many years. My most recent development involves creating digital designs using my home computer. The designs are sometimes used in textile work but are equally likely to be framed as digital art. I have taught City & Guilds Creative Computing 7822-42 since 2001 and am thrilled that this (Level 2 Certificate) course is now available entirely Online with DesignMatters. Maureen Shenton
For many years I worked in the field of soft furnishings and dressmaking. Quilting was always an important feature of my work and I have really enjoyed achieving City & Guilds' qualifications in Patchwork and Quilting. To indulge this interest I now run a longarm machine quilting service for clients and also create home furnishing items for sale. I share my time between houses in England and southern France and welcome the flexibility that working with DesignMatters and the internet allows me. I am a fluent French speaker and look forward to working with students, especially those who may benefit from my language skills as much as my knowledge of quiltmaking.

What do I need to take part?
All teaching, exchanges of information and assessment will take place online, so you will need a computer! You will also need internet access, a scanner, a camera (not necessarily digital!) and a printer. Before you pay any money towards the course, a simple communication test will be carried out. Only when we are both reassured that the channels of communication are open will we proceed! The quality of the images received from you is important to enable fair and accurate assessment of your work. If there is insufficient detail shown on the scanned image, we may have to request the work be mailed to DesignMatters and this would be at your expense. The computer skills needed to follow the courses will be kept as simple as possible. We want you to focus on the course, not worry about mastering technology! For 7822-42 Creative Computing you will need particular system requirements. Please visit the FAQ pages to find out more.
