'In The Arms of Morpheus'

2001
47"h x 45.5"w

Private Collection

This wallhanging was made in response to the challenge set anually by The Charles Henry Foyle Trust. Graduates are invited to produce a piece of work according to the specified theme. The year I entered it was 'Perchance to Dream'. The selected finalists are then exhibited at the Redditch Needle Musem, UK.
Inspired by lines from Hamlet, I was drawn to the mythology of sleep and science of sleep. The god Morpheus is known for luring people to sleep with poppies. I began to photograph and draw poppies and was particulary fascinated by the seed head forms. A whole series of work grew from this one theme.
This piece involves the imagery of poppies within a structured framework dictated by our sleep patterns.
