'Surrounded'

I love the landscape around where I live. Large open fields are bounded by tall dark hawthorn and blackthorn hedges. The structure of this quilt reflects the hedges and is intended to recreate the sense of being surrounded by them, at one moment forbidding, at the other protective.
I am also fascinated by quilt history and what quilts represent to different generations. At one time quilts would have been made solely for function - to cover a bed. As the fashion for art quilts grow, makers create quilts intended only for walls. This quilt is a step towards regaining the interaction with the viewer. I hope that when people see 'Surrounded', they walk inside and again feel close to the quilt.
This quilt won 1st Large Innovative, Festival of Quilts, 2003 and 2nd Machine Quilting, Festival of Quilts 2003.
