Boutis is a traditional French quilting technique. Worked with just two layers of fabric and no wadding, the design is stitched and then padded from the reverse to create a delicate relief design.
Traditionally French women would hang the Boutis quilting in their windows as the light would shine though and the padded design would been seen as a shadow. The technique can be worked equally as successfuly as part of a quilt, bag or like Maureen's example here, as a little decorative pillow. Maureen has made a very pretty lavender sachet trimmed with vintage lace.
A kit is the ideal way to try out a new technique and we are delighted to stock Boutis for Beginners kits from Quilting Place. Each kit contains fabric, thread sewing and stuffing needles and instructions. (Backing fabric for cushion, lace and padding/lavender not included)
